Four basic parts of a URL

The four basic parts of a url (Uniform Resource Locator) is as follows:

Protocol://domain name.top-level domain/path

The path is the section of the URL that the black diamond technologies team focuses on when providing URL Structure management as a service.

The path indicates the precise location on the website where the page is located. Similar to the file location on your hard drive which can be located by following a logical sequence of perfectly organized folders. (Or so we all tell ourselves ;))

At the URL structural level our team takes efforts to help your audience find your webpage by optimizing the website to meet search engine requirements. These efforts take into consideration the keywords that the audience will be using to find your page, when organizing the path to your webpage.

The following tasks are completed when managing the url structure of the website:

  1. Plan website categories by considering web searches and the keywords that highlight the content on your page.
    1. Is your URL path relevant to the page content?
    2. Are the keywords used in the path used in popular searchers?
    3. How does your URL path structure compare to your top competitors?
    4. Is the URL simple to read and understand?
    5. Does the URL path make sense from a structural point of view (i.e. drilldown categories, subfolders, etc.)
